AI Is the Third Major Technology Shift of Our Lifetime. Are You Leveraging it Right?

Every major technology wave creates two kinds of leverage.

Optimization and Expansion

Both matter. But they create very different outcomes.

- The PC revolution did. - The Internet revolution did.

AI will too.

But most companies are currently exploring only one half of the opportunity.

A useful way to think about it is through a simple framework:

Optimization: Doing Existing Things Better

The first impact of any new technology is optimization.

Existing work becomes faster, cheaper and more efficient.

For example:

Customer support teams are already using AI to:

- summarize support tickets - draft responses - suggest solutions to agents - analyze conversations

The work itself does not fundamentally change.

Support just becomes faster, cheaper and more scalable.

The same pattern is appearing everywhere:

- analysts summarizing large datasets instantly - marketers producing campaign drafts in minutes - operations teams automating documentation and reporting

Optimization improves productivity, margins and speed.

Every business should pursue this.

But historically, this is only the first layer of disruption.

Expansion: Doing Things That Were Impossible Before

The bigger opportunity is expansion.

New technologies also enable capabilities that were simply not possible earlier.

For example:

Customer support no longer needs to depend entirely on human teams.

AI agents can resolve entire categories of issues autonomously, across voice, chat and email — 24/7 and at global scale.

Support stops being just a cost center and becomes an always available service layer.

Or take expertise.

In many industries, valuable knowledge is limited by the availability of specialists.

AI makes it possible to capture, scale and distribute expertise instantly, reaching thousands or millions of customers simultaneously.

When intelligence becomes abundant, entirely new products and business models emerge.

We Have Seen This Before:

1) The PC revolution 2) The Internet revolution

AI is shaping up to be the third major shift of this magnitude.

A new foundational capability layer.

A Useful Exercise for Leaders - Ask deeper questions:

- Which services today are constrained by human bandwidth? - What experiences would change if expertise could be delivered instantly? - Which capabilities in our industry are scarce today but could become abundant? - What services would become viable if response times dropped from days to seconds? - What offerings become possible if hyper personalization can scale to millions of users?

These questions often reveal expansion opportunities.

Not just improvements.

If you only focus on optimization, AI will improve your margins.

If you explore expansion, AI may create your next growth engine.

And history suggests the biggest winners in every technology shift are the ones who see both early.
